Scary
Food Facts
Four of the 10
leading causes of death in the United States are
related to diet-- diabetes,
heart disease, cancer and stroke.
Some
Foods to Avoid
1. Soda
A can of regular soda has 10 teaspoons of sugar and 150 calories.
2. Potato chips
and French fries.
Both
contain acrylamide, a known
carcinogen and neurotoxin that is formed when foods are baked or fried
at high
temperatures. The acrylamide in a large order of fast food fries is at
least
300 times the amount allowed by the Environmental Protection Agency
(EPA) in a
glass of water.
These
foods also contain trans fats--the
artery-clogging fat that raises bad cholesterol and lowers good
cholesterol.
3. Doughnuts.
Donuts
are made of refined sugar and
flour and partially hydrogenated oil/trans fats.
4. Coffee Cake and
Other Baked Goods.
This
includes packaged cake and biscuit
mixes. They typically contain more trans fats than any other other
food, plus corn
syrup.
5. Lunch Meats/Hot
Dogs.
Processed
meats (e.g.
lunch meats, hot dogs, sausage, bacon, pepperoni)
contain a carcinogenic precursor ingredient known as sodium
nitrate.
6. Canned Soup.
Most
canned (and packaged) soups have
high levels of trans fats and sodium. (One cup of canned soup can
have almost 1,000
milligrams of salt. Dietary guidelines recommend no more than 2,400
milligrams
for the whole day!)
